Our Journey

Our History

We are the Sunshine Coast’s most capped Basketball Association.

Suncoast Clippers was established in 1972 as the Maroochydore Amateur Basketball Association and were known as the Maroochydore Sea Eagles.

We were one of the eight original Clubs who formed the State Basketball League (SBL) in 1986. Today the state league competition is know as NBL1 North Competition with our association the Sunshine Coast Phoenix participating in the competition.

Started after a growing demand for basketball on the SC.

The first fixtures were played on a Sunday morning on the Maroochydore High School courts.
The Association built its own outdoor home court at Cotton Tree in 1973. In 1978 we applied for a government grant to build a court at Cotton Tree and laid the footings however the council had other ideas and a one court stadium was built in Buderim that we moved into in September 1984 where we are today.

In 1996 the club registered the name Suncoast Clippers.

In 2017 Noosa Basketball, Caloundra Basketball, and Maroochydore Basketball (Clippers) were combined and became
the Sunshine Coast Phoenix Basketball Association.

Added another 2 courts to the stadium in 2017 to be a 3 court multi sport stadium.

Since 1972

State League History

One of the Eight Original Clubs

The Maroochydore Eagles Basketball were one of the eight original Clubs who formed the State Basketball League (SBL) in 1986. The SBL later became a member of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), then the Australian Basketball League (ABA) with the Queensland Conference known as the Queensland Australian Basketball League (QABL).

The Maroochydore Club started as the Maroochydore Sea Eagles and in an attempt to involve all clubs on Sunshine Coast we changed our name to the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles. In 1996 there was a committee of Caloundra, Nambour, and Maroochydore formed to organise the teams and in 1997 the Maroochydore Club were returned sole rights to the license with the Men’s team going on to win the National Championship.

In 1999 the Maroochydore Basketball, along with other foundation Clubs of the SBL, formed a new Conference known as the Southern Cross. It took a few years for Queensland Basketball to accept the Southern Cross which eventually became the South Conference of the QABL.

In 2007 Basketball in Queensland returned to a full State Competition with 15 Clubs all with Ladies’ and Men’s teams.

In 2015 The Sunshine Basketball was formed and known as Sunshine Coast Phoenix. In 2016 in the State basketball League, we played as the Phoenix Clippers and in 2017 Noosa Basketball, Caloundra Basketball, and Maroochydore Basketball were combined and became the Sunshine Coast Phoenix as you know them today.

Sid Page has kept a through record of our state league teams and players from the first game through to the most recent 2022 NBL1 season. A huge thank you to Sid and all his work with keeping these records for the club and you can view these records by clicking the links below:

Clippers 50 Years
Turning 50
Clippers Basketball celebrated turning 50 at the final home Phoenix NBL1 game of the 2022 season on the 30th July. Our teams wore the iconic orange replica Maroochydore Sea Eagles jerseys on the night that were auctioned off to raise money for a planned stadium renovation, with special edition beers created for the night

It was a great event and so amazing to see many old faces from Life Members, volunteers to past state league Sea Eagles, Clippers and Phoenix players at the event. It was also great to see the “vintage” Sea Eagles, Clippers and Phoenix uniforms on the night as we celebrate this amazing milestone of 50 years of Basketball on the Sunshine Coast!

Thank you to all who attended and lets make sure its not as long between catch ups next time!

With Gratitude
